The Wings added a 6′4″ D-man who’s a whole bunch of Nasty? Hell Yeah!
Ideally Kolosov would be an evil version of Andreas Lilja
MLIVE continues to provide some solid updates on the Red Wings. Today they are reporting the team has signed prospect Sergei Kolosov to a two-year contract. Due to a lack of a transfer agreement he remained a Red Wings prospect rather than become a free agent.
Here’s what Hockey’s Future has to say about him:
The Wings hoped Kolsov would develop his game in the WHL in 2004-05, but he elected to stay in Belarus. Judging by his performance at the WJC’s, the decision hasn’t hurt his progress. The 6’4, 190lb defenseman hammered opposing forwards along the boards and did a good job clearing the crease.
…
Kolosov is a hulking defenseman who has solid skating ability for a man of his size. He reads the play pretty well and is sound defensively. He displays a good attitude when on the ice. He works hard and is a physical presence.
Obligatory You Tube clip of him hammering a forward along the boards during the World Junior Championships? Sure, courtesy of the Red Wings board over at HF Boards:
Dude got a MATCH PENALTY for freaking HEAD-BUTTING a guy during a fight. No Lady Byng for you Sergei. And that’s exactly what his role will be if he’s ever to suit up for the Red Wings: physical, gritty defenseman. If he can be a solid shot blocker, PK’er and be physical when appropriate then he can be Andreas Lilja’s replacement after Lilja’s new contract expires. That would likely give Kolosov two years in Grand Rapids to get acclimated to his role, likely as a third pairing D-man. It looks like he played on the top pairing in the USHL but that isn’t likely to happen again as he moves up the North American hockey foodchain.
This past season he played for Dinamo Minsk in Belarus. He’d spent the previous two seasons in Cedar Rapids, playing in the USHL - the league where newly minted Red Wing Max Nicastro has been playing. Kolosov hasn’t put up much in the way of points but his penalty minutes haven’t been out of control. The MLIVE article indicates he’ll likely play in Grand Rapids next season.
In an ideal world he’ll develop to the point where he’ll be at about Andreas Lilja’s level of play. If that’s the case he’ll be a great third pairing guy who can play on the PK.

wow, he looks like an exciting prospect! But do you think he’ll work his way into the NHL in just a couple years? after all, he’s got Quincey, Meech and Ericsson ahead of him, and there’s Kindl, Smith, and Pyatt too. On the other hand none of those guys except maybe Ericsson looks as big and nasty.
I think his main competition right now is Quincey for the stay at home d-man on the third pairing. All of the other guys are offensive defensemen. Q has shown the ability to be physical but he also took a huge step back last season.
