SI and anonymous tipsters

I mentioned that Michael Phelps was likely to copy that famous Mark Spitz pose. Sports Illustrated got on that right away:

Very nice. The UofM websites have given Phelps a Buckstache.

Staying briefly in the Buckeye state before washing like 300 times to make it all go away, Bethany over at Bethany’s Hockey Rants received an anonymous tip that 2007 second round draft pick Stefan Legein has decided to give up his pursuit of a career as a hockey player and retired at the ripe old age of 19.

Bethany scooped up the lead and dished it off to BJs beat writer Aaron Portzline and let him carry the mail. He reached out to contacts within the organization and gets the official word from Columbus general manager Scott Howson. Portzline gives Bethany credit for receiving the information and forwarding it to him and fortunately we don’t have to listen to another episode of bloggers v. mainstream media UFC edition.

George over at Snapshots has been kind enough to forward an article on Chris Chelios’ time with the Cup. Cheli had the Cup once on the west coast but is celebrating with it here in his hometown and is expected to bring the Cup to the White Sox game. Here is the pertinent part of the article:

Chelios appearance: Detroit Red Wings defenseman/Chicago native Chris Chelios is expected to be at U.S. Cellular Field on Friday when the White Sox play the Tampa Bay Rays. Chelios is going to bring a special guest - the Stanley Cup Trophy.

I contacted the reporter who wrote that article for the Herald and here is what he had to say:

No info, but I would imagine he’ll have the Cup on the field before the game. Scot G

I’m going to try to contact the Sox today and see if I can get any more information. I’ll post whatever I’m able to find out assuming the White Sox have any information. Christy from Behind the Jersey fame expressed some interest in coming to town to check out the Cup again but is having knee trouble so I hope she’s feeling better. And Pete from Yzerman is God expressed some interest in checking out the festivities so we’ll see how things go.

I might have to dress up as Elvis before I head over to the Cell.
